eBay Bans Airbag Sales: What Buyers and Automotive Parts Sellers Need to Know
eBay has announced that airbags and several related components will no longer be permitted for sale on its platform beginning September 24, 2026.
The policy applies to every eBay seller and covers the entire airbag category. According to eBay, the change follows a comprehensive review of the potential safety risks associated with these products.
Which Airbag Parts Are Banned on eBay?
Under the new policy, sellers may no longer list or sell these standalone components:
- Airbags
- Airbag inflators, also known as gas generators
- Steering wheel airbag covers
Sellers have been instructed to remove affected products from their active, scheduled and draft listings by September 24, 2026. eBay will remove listings that remain after the deadline.
Removing an affected listing—or having eBay remove it as part of the policy change—will not negatively affect a seller’s policy compliance history. However, attempting to relist a prohibited product may result in selling restrictions.
What About Airbag Sensors and Control Modules?
The policy treats certain airbag-system electronics differently from airbags and inflators. These components include:
- Airbag control units
- Crash and impact sensors
- Diagnostic modules
- Passenger sensors
In the United States, only sellers who have already received eBay approval may list these components. Sellers outside the United States can continue listing permitted parts that do not contain an airbag or inflator.
Buyers should not assume that every airbag-related listing is prohibited. The restriction depends on the component, seller approval and the market where the product is listed.
What Does the eBay Airbag Ban Mean for Buyers?
Drivers, repair facilities and automotive rebuilders will no longer be able to use eBay to purchase standalone airbags, inflators or steering wheel airbag covers.
This change may make it more difficult to find replacement restraint-system components for certain vehicles, especially older, specialty or less common models. Buyers may need to work with qualified automotive recyclers, repair facilities, dealerships or other approved suppliers when sourcing safety-system parts.
Airbags are critical safety components. Correct fitment should always be verified using the vehicle identification number, part number and applicable manufacturer information. Installation should be completed by a qualified professional who understands supplemental restraint systems.
What This Means for Automotive Recyclers
The eBay policy affects dismantlers and recycled auto-parts businesses that have relied on the marketplace to reach customers seeking used safety-system components.
Sellers must review all active, scheduled and draft listings before the deadline. They should also check listings for steering wheels or interior assemblies that could include a prohibited airbag, inflator or airbag cover.
This is an eBay marketplace policy—not a statement that every used automotive component has been prohibited across every sales channel. Businesses must still comply with all federal, state and local requirements governing the sale, shipment and installation of automotive safety equipment.
