How to Check Whether an Airbag or Inflator Has Been Recalled
Before purchasing or installing any airbag-system component, check whether the vehicle, airbag, or inflator is affected by a safety recall. This step matters for both the vehicle being repaired and any donor vehicle.
Recall research is also essential when looking for parts outside eBay after the eBay airbag ban.
Step 1: Locate the 17-Character VIN
Find the VIN on the lower driver-side windshield, registration, or insurance information. Record it accurately. One incorrect character can produce the wrong result.
For a used component, obtain the donor VIN whenever possible. A seller who cannot document a component’s origin leaves you with less information for recall and fitment research.
Step 2: Use NHTSA’s Recall Lookup
Enter the VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls. The tool can show unrepaired recalls associated with the VIN for participating manufacturers.
A result showing “0 unrepaired recalls” is not a complete history. NHTSA says the VIN tool may not show:
- A recall that has already been repaired
- Some newly announced recalls while VINs are still being identified
- Many recalls more than 15 years old
- Some small-manufacturer or specialty applications
- International recalls
Step 3: Contact the Manufacturer
Ask the vehicle manufacturer or an authorized dealership to review the VIN, OEM part number, and any relevant campaign history. This is especially important when a replacement component may have been installed after the vehicle was built.
A VIN lookup follows the vehicle’s reported recall record. It may not reveal the history of a different airbag later installed in that vehicle.
Step 4: Verify the Component
Use the complete OEM part number and donor information. Do not rely on the cover design or vehicle model alone. Our guide explains how to verify an airbag part number and fitment.
Watch for altered labels, missing serial information, unexplained markings, damaged connectors, or signs the assembly was opened. Do not energize or probe the terminals.
Step 5: Recheck Before Installation
Recall information can change. Recheck close to installation and follow any manufacturer remedy or interim safety instructions. A qualified repair professional should evaluate the entire SRS.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the NHTSA recall lookup free?
Yes. NHTSA provides free searches by VIN and other vehicle or equipment information.
Does “0 unrepaired recalls” guarantee the airbag is safe?
No. It only describes the information shown for that VIN at that time and has stated limitations.
Can I search a replacement airbag using only my vehicle VIN?
The receiving VIN is important, but a replacement component may have a separate donor history. Use the donor VIN and complete part number when available.
